There’s something truly special about spending a day exploring the town you call home. Recently, my family and I found ourselves with a free Saturday in Fort Mill, South Carolina. With two young kids in tow, we set out to fill our day with a mix of experiences that would keep every member of our crew entertained. Here’s our adventure, broken down into the best stops and moments.
A Delicious Start to the Day
No day of adventure begins without a solid breakfast. We kicked things off at Poppyseed Kitchen, a beloved local spot known for its comforting morning fare. Their breakfast sandwiches were sizzling and flavorful, while the burritos were packed to the brim and perfectly seasoned. The specialty baked goods were an absolute treat, with flaky pastries and rich, indulgent flavors. For lighter options, the spread of fresh fruits and granola offered a refreshing balance. The family-friendly vibe made the experience even better. Our kids were delighted by the coloring pages and tabletop games, and the giant Connect 4 on the patio was an instant hit.
Coffee and Creativity
Once breakfast was sorted, it was time for a caffeine boost. We headed to Olive’s Mud Puddle, a cozy coffee haven that also serves as an art gallery featuring works by local artists. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with the scent of fresh coffee mingling with the creative energy of the space. We each grabbed an iced latte, the perfect remedy for South Carolina’s heat. While sipping our drinks, we picked up the latest edition of the Discover Downtown Coloring Book, a charming keepsake filled with illustrations of local businesses. It was the perfect combination of relaxation and inspiration.
Friendly Competition on the Green
Fully caffeinated and ready for action, we made our way to Mr. Putty’s Fun Park. This lively destination offers a mix of outdoor attractions, but the highlight for us was the 18-hole mini-golf course. The course was thoughtfully designed with creative obstacles and water features, making every hole a new adventure. The competitive spirit kicked in as we tried to outdo each other, but the laughs and lighthearted banter made it all the more enjoyable. The air misters scattered throughout the park provided a refreshing cooldown, making the experience even more comfortable.
An Afternoon of Games and Good Eats
With the sun high in the sky, we decided to spend part of our afternoon at Spare Time Entertainment. This all-in-one entertainment center offers bowling, arcade games, laser tag, and a full-service restaurant. We kicked things off with a few rounds of bowling, where our kids’ excitement grew with every strike and spare. Afterward, the arcade called our names, and we spent a solid hour racking up tickets and trying out a variety of games. When hunger struck, we settled into the restaurant area for some delicious burgers and loaded fries. The combination of games and good food made this stop a family favorite.
A Stroll Through Anne Springs Close Greenway
Before wrapping up the day, we took some time to enjoy the natural beauty of Anne Springs Close Greenway. This sprawling outdoor space offers scenic trails, peaceful lakes, and plenty of spots for a family picnic. We chose a gentle hiking path that was perfect for kids and took in the fresh air and lush surroundings. The kids loved spotting wildlife, and we even stumbled upon a small playground where they could burn off some extra energy. It was a refreshing and calming way to balance out the day’s high-energy activities.
A Sweet Finish
No family adventure is complete without a little indulgence, so we ended our day at Sweet Treats Candy & Confections. The moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by rows of colorful candies and the scent of sugary delights. From specialty chocolates and classic jelly beans to whimsical lollipops, the selection was impressive. Our kids’ eyes widened with excitement as they filled their bags with their favorite treats. It was the perfect way to wrap up our day of exploration.
Spending a day discovering the gems of Fort Mill reminded us of the joy that comes from exploring our own backyard. If you haven’t taken the time to dive into your local community, there’s no better moment than now. Adventure and memorable experiences are often closer than you think.
